Medical Spas > Non-Surgical Skin Tightening

Wrinkled and sagging skin on the face and body can be tightened without surgery by using infrared light pulses. Infrared or IR light is delivered through a handpiece in an array of small beams.

Each beam heats a column in the skin's dermis that is then stimulated to remodel its collagen and fill in areas of wrinkles and aid in overall skin tightening.

No surgical incisions or injections are required. Lingering warmth and redness fades in a few hours, and a patient may resume most normal activities almost immediately.

A series of treatments is required at 2-4 week intervals for a minimum of six treatments, after which monthly maintenance treatments are needed to maintain the improvement.

Another approach is to employ radio-frequency radiation, or RF radiation, to heat collagen and effect a similar improvement.

The most common RF brand of treatment is Thermage ®, also known as ThermaCool ®. The device cools the skin surface while heating the collagen in the dermis in pulses lasting several seconds.

Skin tightening occurs immediately, continues to increase for several months afterwards, and may last for up to two years. Side-effects from Thermage treatment may include swelling and blistering but also the later appearance of bumps or depressions. As with infrared treatment methods, be aware that more than a few patients note little or no real improvement.
