Lips and Nails > Lip Treatments
Lip treatments include lipstick, liquid lip color, lip gloss, lip balm, and products for chapped lips.
The first lipsticks were made from crushed coffee beans, while Cleopatra made hers from crushed beetles. Today's formulations contain oils, waxes, emollients, texture, and, of course, every sort of pigment available, some of which are known toxins and carcinogens. The liquid versions (lip stains) are wax-free and much longer lasting.
Lip glosses are used to add a glossy luster but only subtle color or none at all. Some are frosted, glittered, or metallic. Many flavored and sun-screened versions exist.

A number of companies have introduced "green" products that use natural ingredients except for the preservatives. Antioxidants are sometimes added, though there is no proven benefit.
A lip liner is intended to fill in uneven spots along the edges after lipstick has been applied. It often resembles a pencil.
Lip plumpers make lips look fuller without the expense of an injectable filler. Such products tend to irritate the thin lip skin with menthol or camphor and make them swell. While some products contend that such irritation may stimulate collagen production, the claim in highly doubtful.
