Hair > General Hair Care and Maintenance

Maintaining good hair health is not so much a matter of using expensive shampoos or applying lots of fancy styling products. On the contrary, it's a matter of maintaining your overall general health (since your hair if a direct reflection of this) and avoiding bad habits, including, seemingly paradoxically, overuse some of the very products marketed as enhancing the hair's natural beauty.

Normal hair growth is dependent on an adequate supply of many different trace nutrients better supplied by a well-balanced healthy diet than a bottle of biologically damaged vitamins. Fad dieting can lead to protein deficiencies and anemia, both factors that will decrease hair growth and health.

Keeping your hair reasonably short makes it easier to keep both it and your scalp clean. Shorter hair requires less hair brushing that can cause mechanical injury.

Excessive perming, dyeing, and bleaching can wreck havoc with your hair by causing it to dry out, become rough or porous, and, of course, causing it to crack and split. Braiding and overly hot hair drying can do the same.

Harsh chemical components found in many beauty products --cheap and expensive-- may produce allergy, irritation, and even infection. None are truly necessary to have healthy hair.
