LASIK is an operation that employs a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. A thin flap in the cornea is made with a blade or laser, folded back, and then the exposed corneal bed beneath it is treated with the excimer laser.

Other types of refractive surgery besides LASIK also exist and have their own advantages and disadvantages. The common goal in all is to reshape the focusing function of the eye's transparent cornea.

  

Why Do It?

Some people like the way they look with glasses; some don't. People with powerful corrective prescriptions can dislike the way their eyes appear magnified (if farsighted) or minified (if nearsighted) through thick lenses.

So while LASIK and other refractive surgeries are usually chosen for their vision benefits, cosmetic issues (which is what this site is all about) can and do enter into the decision.
