Cosmetic Surgery > Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, is a popular plastic surgery operation, especially among younger men. In the "closed" version, the incision to approach the anatomy is made inside of the nostril and out of sight. In the "open" version, a small incision is make in the skin between the nostrils.

Once separated from the skin, the cartilage and bone of the nose can be reshaped and then held in place with nasal packing and external stents as it all heals.

In addition to rearranging existing tissues, noses can also be built up with bone or cartilage grafts or implants or pared down to make them more dainty. If air flow and breathing problems are concerns, tissues inside the nostrils may be thinned down (turbinectomy) or straightened (deviated septum).

Why Do It?

Rhinoplasty surgery can be used to treat aesthetic issues or more serious problems like trauma, birth defects, or breathing problems.

Ethnic rhinoplasty usually refers to nasal reshaping done on patients of East Asian or African descent. While the basic techniques are the same, doctors who specialize in ethnic surgery come to have a heightened sense of aesthetics when it comes to addressing a slightly different set of preexisting anatomical conditions.

Revision rhinoplasty is when surgery is carried out to repair a less than satisfactory previous result. Because of previous scarring and tissue loss, these are difficult operations. Good revision rhinoplasty surgeons are not that easy to find.
