Plastic Surgery > Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion discussed here is the real thing rather than its distant cousin named "microdermabrasion" that is a very modified and much weaker version of the concept. Dermabrasion is a powerful skin resurfacing procedure much like laser resurfacing or chemical peels. The superficial skin is removed by "sanding" with a rotating diamond burr.

The procedure requires a great deal of operator skill and experience but can produce outstanding results. It is, unfortunately, becoming something of a lost art.

Why Do It?

As with other types of skin resurfacing, dermabrasion is used to treat sun-damaged skin, scars, and brow spots. It is more effective with raised scars than those that are depressed.

Dermabrasion is painful and takes a long time to heal fully. Still, the results can be magnificent.

Laser resurfacing has largely replaced the procedure, and some patients are forced to search far and wide for an experienced surgeon.
