Cosmeceuticals > Retinoids

Retinoids are a family of compounds related chemically to vitamin A. The most well-known example is retinoic acid or tretinoin, otherwise known as Retin-A ®, used for over thirty years to treat acne, wrinkles, and sun damaged skin.

Newer retinoids are used to treat a wide variety of skin disorders from psoriasis to more severe acne to skin cancers.

Chronic application of retinoids to the skin causes the outer layer to peel or exfoliate, thus providing a mild chemical peel. Renova ® contains added emollients to moisturize the skin and make it feel less dry during the treatment.

By removing dead cells while stimulating new cell growth below, the skin's texture and coloration (age spots, light freckling) are improved.

Tazorac ® is a third-generation skin retinoid used to treat acne by unclogging pores. It is available only by prescription.
