Cosmeceuticals > Peptides

Peptides are short molecules formed from the linking of amino acids. Proteins are considered polypeptides because they are much longer and more complex. Most peptides are less the 50 amino acids long but there is no firm rule for this division and some reach into the hundreds. Longer than an amino acid; shorter than a protein--so what's the big deal?

Some peptides possess hormonal activity that signals cells when to start or stop certain biological processes. An example is GHRH, or growth hormone releasing hormone.

Some newer and extremely pricey cosmetic lines now list "peptides" as a featured ingredient. Citing concepts like neuro-regulation, hormonal modulation, and intercellular messengers, they hint at age-defying results that nobody could have even imagined a few years ago. "The new reality" is how one manufacturer likes to put it.

Does $500 an once sound too expensive? Other so-called "Age-Defying" creams sell at the drug store for around $5 an once.

Well, if you want the very latest, get used to it.

Of course, the big question is do these products even work? Just a little? A lot? Not at all? And are they clinically proven and safe? The FDA has no jurisdiction here so don't bother asking.

For now, all you can do is fork over big bucks and take the company's word for it.
