Cosmeceuticals is a term joining "cosmetics" with "pharmaceuticals" and denotes a potion that just might (the 'might' needs to be loudly emphasized) produce some dramatic (although more likely extremely minor) improvement.

Also termed "hope in a jar," these "quasi-drugs" cater to our minor vanities and are surprisingly expensive.

Since most such creams, lotions, and ointments are unregulated by the FDA (which refuses to recognize the name as valid), many, if not most, cosmeceutical product claims are based on flimsy evidence or even complete fantasy.

"Active ingredients" may have names that sound impressive, even if they are present in miniscule amounts and confer no biological effect. Like perfumes, the packaging of cosmeceuticals is absolutely sensational.

Cosmeceuticals are a big revenue item in the beauty industry and heavily marketed. Pay close attention to what others have to say here about their experiences with these always enticing products. Just remember - buyer beware.
